Say Less, Mean More: The Communication Tool That Changed Our Marriage

Say Less, Mean More shadows of a couple talking

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say to your spouse is only three words long.

Nobody ever sat Tim and me down and taught us how to communicate.

There was no class for it, no manual handed to us at the wedding. So we did what most couples do — we communicated the way we’d seen it done. The way our parents did it. The way our siblings and our friends did it. We picked it up by watching, and we carried those patterns straight into our marriage without ever questioning whether they actually worked.

For years, they didn’t.

The Cycle We Couldn’t Break

Here’s what our conflict looked like for far too long.

Something would hurt me, and I’d want Tim to understand — really understand — so I’d explain. And then I’d explain some more. I’d give him what I now lovingly call the War and Peace version: what he did, why it hurt, how long it had been going on, what he should have done instead, and probably what I imagined he’d been thinking while he did it.

My heart was good. I wasn’t trying to wound him. I just wanted to be understood.

But the more words I poured out, the more Tim shut down. He’d go quiet, or he’d get defensive — and the moment he got defensive, I felt even more unheard. So I did the only thing I knew to do: I added more words. Surely if I explained it one more way, he’d finally get it. He’d finally feel what I was feeling.

He never did. Instead, we’d end up further apart than when we started. Around and around we went, down a no-win path, both of us exhausted and neither of us feeling loved.

It wasn’t a love problem. We loved each other deeply the whole time. It was that we had never learned how to reach each other in a way the other person could actually receive.

What Finally Changed

Everything shifted the day we stopped asking “How do I make my point?” and started asking “How does my spouse hear, understand, and feel respected?”

That question changed our marriage. And out of it came one of the most important tools in our toolbox — the one we teach our couples again and again:

Less is more.

Not because your feelings don’t matter. Not because you should stay silent. But because fewer, truer words carry far more weight than a flood of them. Two honest words can land where two hundred anxious ones never could.

I keep two simple pictures in mind whenever I’m tempted to explain just a little more.

The lemonade. Imagine a glass of fresh lemonade — sweet, clear, full of flavor. Now add a glass of water. Then another. Then another. Before long it barely tastes like lemonade at all. That’s what happens to our message when we keep adding words. Every extra justification, every “and another thing,” waters it down until our spouse can’t taste the heart of what we’re saying anymore. Don’t water it down. Say what matters — then stop.

The tennis court. When you speak your truth honestly and kindly, you’ve hit the ball over the net. It’s in your spouse’s court now. Your job isn’t to run across, grab the ball back, and hit it again in a different way. Your job is to leave it in their court — and trust them to respond. If you keep hitting, they never get the chance to think, to soften, to reach back. Hit the ball once. Then let it rest.

Now, instead of the War and Peace version, I’ve learned to say things like:

“That hurt.” “I don’t feel heard.” “I need a minute.”

And then — this is the hard part — I stop. I leave it in his court. And more times than I can count, that short, honest sentence has opened a door that a hundred anxious words kept slamming shut.

The Truth We Hold Onto

There’s a verse that anchors all of this for us: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1). And another we lean on: “Be quick to listen, slow to speak” (James 1:19).

We’ve come to believe that God can do more with one honest sentence spoken in love than we can accomplish with a hundred words spoken in fear, pain or frustration. Our part is to speak the truth — clearly, gently, once. Then we trust Him with the rest.

If You’ve Been Stuck in the Same Cycle

If you’ve been giving the War and Peace version and watching your spouse shut down or become defensive… if you’ve felt that no-win exhaustion… please hear this:

You are not broken. You were just never taught.

Most of us weren’t. We inherited our communication the way we inherited everything else — by watching. But what was handed to you is not your destiny. There is a better way, and it can be learned, one honest sentence at a time.

This is exactly why we’re putting Less Is More into your hands. It’s a small tool with a big return — and it’s the kind of thing that can start to change the whole atmosphere of a marriage.

Say less. Mean more. Leave it in their court.

Then watch what God does with the space you’ve made.
