Remember the TV show Lassie? If you’re old enough, you do. The storyline was typically the same, the ending was always good. Lassie would know that there was a problem. Usually, the problem was with Timmy, his faithful companion. Timmy would fall down a well or get stuck on the train tracks or something like that. Timmy would instruct Lassie, “Go get help!” Lassie would go running looking for help, and when she found others, she would bark and jump up and down. Lassie would lead them to Timmy, and all would be saved.

Nice story, cute kid, great dog. If only it were so easy! Sometimes, the key to our issues is to recognize that we can’t do it alone or we can’t continue to do what we have been doing and expect different results. We need help. We are stuck. We need motivation. Sometimes, we need a coach to help us through this journey we are on. Sometimes, we need reinforcements to give us rest. To recognize that you need help is not a weakness; in fact, it’s a sign of strength. The apostles needed it.

So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. “We should spend our time preaching, not administering a feeding program,” they said. “Now look around among yourselves, dear brothers, and select seven men, wise and full of the Holy Spirit, who are well thought of by everyone; and we will put them in charge of this business. Then we can spend our time in prayer, preaching and teaching.”
Acts 6:2–4

The Apostles had a problem; they went and got some help. In the seven they chose, they selected Stephen, the first martyr for Christ; they selected Philip, a man to whom an Angel spoke who would lead many to Christ. Not a bad selection process. So, when we need help and Lassie is not around, let’s look and find those who are wise and full of the Holy Spirit. They will do amazing things for us.

So today, Lord, we thank You for those individuals You have put into our lives to help us, to guide us, to pray with us. We pray that we have the wisdom to recognize when we need help, when we can’t get through our situation, we just can’t get the problem solved, or we can’t get the project done. We know You have our good in mind; we pray for the quietness to listen to You as you select the very best person or group to help us through our current dilemma. We thank You, Father, for Your continual and unwavering care. Amen.

Have a Helpful Day.

—Tim
